It seems, like most unions now a days they try to slow down progress instead of adapting to it. Technology will move forward with them (and no layoffs) , or without them and then layoffs.
Why would a employee not do what his company wants done?

I took a closer look at the wording. The document specifies voice only. So, if someone is a DSL subscriber, the technician can repair the copper.

Why would a employee not do what his company wants done? Has nothing to do with the unions, it's because the customers do not want it. They want, and pay for, a landline.

I don't think the customers care one about how the technology is delivered as long as it works. It's actually a good idea in my book. Once you reach the Verizon Wireless network it is rock solid and far more reliable than the aging copper plant. And it absolutely is the union fighting this change.
