Do the phones that worked on a DS1000/DS2000 work on an NEC DSX40 or DSX80?

no , you could use DSX phones on the 2000 with the proper card . but no 1000/2000 on DSX

The DS1000/2000 phone can work in the DSX when you slot a DSTU card in the DSX 80 or 160 in any slot but number 1
DSX phones will not work in the DS1000/2000 system
