Many years ago, our Church had the contractor that serviced the building's two "locomotive" furnaces fabricate and install a panel that serves multiple functions. The panel has an Elyssa TD-100 attached to the outside and is used to notify if either furnace goes into alarm.
When I brought DT to the panel, I noticed that there was only one telephone cable present. The cable is terminated with a 2p6c plug. The contractor did not provide any documentation for the dialer. Realizing that this plug wouldn't work properly with a 31x jack, I used a simple wall jack and parallel wired the dialer to our rarely used fax line back in the phone closet using 2/24 cable.
A year or two ago, I located the documentation for the dialer online, printed out a hard copy and filed it away.
Today, I revisited the dialer. Knowing that such auto dialers are supposed to be connected into a phone line via a 31x jack, I set out to find out how this would work.
What I discovered is that, on the dialer's backplane, there are two single pair jacks. One is designated for service from the CO while the other is for telephones. The only cable present is plugged into the CO jack.
Given that a 31x is an 8P8C, and, that the dialer has two jacks to connect into the house wiring, a straight connection between the dialer and a 31x isn't possible unless I jerry-rig a cable.
What I'm thinking of doing is keeping the Suttle wall jack in place, make two cables to connect to the jacks on the dialer's backplane, use the WH/BL pair to the phone closet for dial tone to the dialer and the WH/OR to bring DT back to the closet to connect to the fax machine and phone system (we use the fax line as a third voice line for outgoing calls as need).
This wouldn't require much of a re-wire on my part...make two short cables on the dialer end and do a, hopefully, simple wire move back in the phone closet to split the fax line at a 66 block.
Would this arrangement pass muster...or...should I crimp an 8p8c onto the end of a four pair cable, split the pairs, crimp a 6p4c plug onto the two working pairs, change out the wall jack at the dialer to a 31x and move the wires around in the phone closet
