Hi All,

I just received a bunch of "junk"as my wife puts it, that is some old 500 sets to be cleaned and polished, hardware and a few KTU modules, specifically the 415 units (I believe for a tie line, whatever that may be).The problem is, there is things like nut shells, dust and well it looks like mousies were engaged in fine dining using one of the cards as a table. I would like to clean these, but I am hesitant to use the spray stuff from the electronics store as this is plastic from the seventies, and I do not want to melt it.

Any suggestions?

Thank you in advance,

Joe

For spot cleaning you can try these steps:

  • Dampen a cotton swab with isopropyl alcohol. You should use isopropyl alcohol that is at least 90%-100% alcohol.
  • Brush the cotton swab across the grime to dislodge it.
  • Allow the alcohol to dry.
  • Use compressed air to blow away any dislodged grime.

Also an eraser is okay for cleaning contacts with light corrosion. Pencil lead is good for unsticking the keys on a dial pad.

For a general plastic cleaning for the housing I would recommend Dawn dish washing detergent.

What Dean said regarding cleaning. There are (or were) professional telephone cleaners. I wouldn't know where to find them anymore.

The 415 card is an automatic ringdown tie line card. You put one KTU in one key system, a second in another key system and connected them with a dedicated pair. As long as the loop resistance wasn't too great when you picked up the line on one side, the other side rang - and vice versa.

Hi Sam,

Is there any documentation for the 415 cards? Where should I search?

Thank you much,

Joe
