Can someone please help me with the endpoint firmware updates? I have the manuals, but they do a poor job of walking you through the steps.

What programming must be done on the endpoint manually?
What programming must be done on the endpoint via a browser?
What programming must be done on the PBX via the browser?
What programming must be done on the PBX via DB Programming?
How do you identify the name of the upgrade file?

Thank you

After continuing my dive, this is what I've found. Using the PBX browser to view (System Managaement\Onboard TFTP Server Log File), I can see that the endpoint is reaching the TFTO. However, the listed file is not there (itphone_3_2_55.bin). System Management\System Upgrade shows that the file was installed, but System Management\Onboard TFTP Server Files does not show the file is available.

I opened the Globalcfg.cfg file to see what Mitel says should be programmed. Using a browser to remote into the Phone itself, under "Phone", I entered both "HWID 3 2.2.00" and "3 2.2.00". In the URL I tried "8662-2.2.00.bin". The display shows "incompatible hw". This is progress. Before, it simply couldn't find the file. I also tried to use "globalcfg.cfg" in the URL. The display shows "not gzip" which is a new one on me.

You need a couple things for this to work:
1. A TFTP server
2. The Firmware files
3. A globalcfg.cfg file OR a 'MAC Address'cfg.cfg file
4. A DHCP server that delivers the TFTP server to the fones OR you manually config each fone via the browser interface or boot menu.

Detail:

1. You can use the 5000 as yer TFTP server from version 2.4 on up (I think). From version 4.0 and up you must login to the 5000 via SSH as the 'support' account to be able to add\delete\edit the .cfg or firmware files. Otherwise tftpd32 is a free TFTP server app that works fine in a Windows environment. You need to obtain the firmware files from a dealer. The globalcfg.cfg file is a text file that should look something like this:

dhcp: 1

# This is the VLAN ID
vlanid: 20

# This is the PC port VLAN
dwnlnk_vlanid_1: 25

sidetone_level: 2

# The IP of the TFTP server.
tftp_url: 172.16.33.10

# Phones will pull this config file every 28800 seconds
update_interval: 28800

#This is the V2 IP Phone Image Pulled from the PBX
itphone_image_ver: 2.2.05
itphone_image_url: 172.16.33.10/itphone_2_2_05.bin

#This is the V2 IP Phone Boot Image Pulled From the PBX
itphone_boot_ver: 2.2.01
itphone_boot_url: 172.16.33.10/itphone_2_2_01_boot.bin

Obviously you edit this example w\ the proper IP addresses and versions. Both the itphone_2_2_05.bin and itphone_2_2_01_boot.bin values must match the firmware filenames EXACTLY or the fone will not update. You do not need the VLAN statements if you are not doing 802.1q tagging.

2. Place the firmware files and .cfg file into a directory and point the tftp server to that directory.

3. You can config yer DHCP server to send options 66 and 67 to the fones. Option 66 is the IP address of the TFTP server. 67 you can create as a string that is blank.

I have been able to update the firmware to 2.2.05. I used the itphone.bin file. However, the system says it has a version 3.2.55.

Mitel 5000 86xx IP Endpoints Firmware 3.2.55 cs-ep-intl Installed.

The 5000 Endpoint Firmware Update documentation says that as long as the software is on the 5000, the endpoints will automatically update. Well, that's not true.

The firmware versions loaded on the 5000 as part of a software upgrade have their own version numbers that represent a 'package version'. The 3.2.55 number is not the firmware version, it is a package that contains the 2.2.05 firmware. 2.2.05 is the latest firmware for the 86XX fones.

If you were using the 53XX Mitel IP fones, they would update automagically with whatever firmware the 5000 had loaded on it. The 86XX fones require the globalcfg.cfg file to be present and correctly configged to update themselves.

If that's the latest version them I'm good. Thanks.

I would like to share a couple of things I learned on the way.

The phone will automatically update if you manually program the phone's TFTP to the PBX IP address. This is the base processor IP address for the 5200 or 5400. It is the processor server IP address for the 5600.

You can also make this happen by changing the phone's browser connection. Under Network, use the PBX's IP address (same IP address as described above). Remove the check mark by "Use DHCP for TFTP Server and Path"

Either of these changes should make updates automatic from now on.

If you need to do a one time update, use the phone's browser connection. Under Phone, enter the image version number (i.e. "2.2.05"). The image URL is the IP address of the PBX (see above) and the file name (i.e. 192.168.1.1/itphone.bin)

I do have a related new issue. My systems in Canada and the UK never complete their installation of the firmware software. I can see the TFTP transfer complete, but the browser screen for the PBX never changes from the "One moment: retrieving data" screen. When my impatience gets the better of me and I refresh the screen, no install was completed.
