I had to work on my first magix yesterday and all went well, but I wanted to get the full story and I don't know enough about the system to know. It was a contract job to install a new 412 card in order to hook up one additional line to the system. The customer already had several 412's and some 016's. First question, are the 016 card stations or trunks. Second question is there any reason that they would need additional "empty" cards being in the system? The reason I asked is that it was obvious they had plenty of spare trunk ports open but the customer was sold a new card to add the new line. When I asked their tech support about it, he said the other cards were there to provide enough ringing voltage to the SL sets. Anyway, I was left with the impression that they were taking the customer for a ride and I would like to know before I do any more work for this company. It may be legit, but just didn't feel right.

The 016 module provides 16 ports for analog devices and has a built in ring generator. The 412 module provides for 4 co lines with caller id support and 12 station ports for the 4400 series telephones. I don't buy having unused cards to supply enough ringing voltage for slt's.

I can't buy the reasoning for ringing voltages. The 016 and 012 cards for single line sets have touch tone receivers, maybe this is what they were trying to justify. The first release of the 012 cards in the Merlin Legend had to be equipped with ringing genarator. Can't answer this one.

Ok, I feel a little better now, thanks for the info. I was thinking the 016 cards were Co ports, there were a couple of spare CO ports one 412 card though, I can maybe chalk that up to a large National company not knowing what they had onsite, and their tech guy not wanting to deal with the paperwork of sending the card back to them. I'll keep an eye on them though. Thanks again.

Those 016 Tip/Ring cards also provide 4 Touch Tone Receivers which are a shared resource across the system. TTRs are needed for DID, voice mail, single line devices, and T1 networking, so that may be the reason that they were included in the original configuration.

Happens all the time. I get alot of spare parts that way.
