I want to use a PC and say, HyperTerminal in place of the G3's usual dumb terminal. How do I go about this? Do I need a null modem cable?

heiff,

I think you will find this post helpful (https://www.sundance-communications.com/forum/Forum5/HTML/000138.html), I had the same question a while ago, apparently, hyperterminal doesn't have the emulation that definity needs, however procomm + has it. However, I am unsure of the harware connections that must be made.

Thanks very much. That post led me (very circuitously) to some information about a Russian guy who has been modifying a freeware Windows application called puTTY to emulate the Bell 513 terminal.

I don't think it's completely sorted out yet, but so far it's the only no-cost solution I've found.

why not just use Avaya Sight Administration on your laptop. It can do everything the 513 can + a whole lot more.

well I *would* use that, but I don't have the ASA software. I hear it's great, but horribly expensive?

Here is the link for the free client:

You can run a cable between the G3 terminal port and a serial port on a pc, and get a login.

Call an avaya BP in your area. The CD costs under $30. If you are training to become a Definity admin, you will want to be skilled in ASA.

thanks very much - I didn't realise it was so inexpensive. I think I must have been confusing it with another application.
