hi guys, i've been reading thru your posts, and i figure i'll start with what i have, then ask my questions. i'm not a telecomm guy, but i'm giving it a stab here, since you seem to know so much about all this stuff.

at our office (only 8 employees) we had a circa 1985 phone system (cohort). i replaced that about 2 months ago with a merlin 820 system, all new cat5 wiring in the office, and 10 bis phones.

now i purchased a legend system so we could do merlin mail voicemail (which i won't even TRY to start to figure out till i get this legend system running).

so i have the legend sitting here at my desk, [installed cards are the power unit, processor which says FM2 on the sticker, (4) 408 GS/LS-MSX modules and (1) 012 module]
i also bought an MLX-20L.

the legend seems to work, there are extension programmed in that i can see in the mlx-20l. people's inside extensions as well as outside numbers. so i guess it's working.

so here's my initial questions:

1. should i buy the att355af so i can program the system ? only way to program it right ?

2. should i get a 408 gs/ls atl to keep the bis phones or just buy all mlx phones ?

really that's all i want to know at this point. that way i'll have direction since i can't use the system anyway right now. i'd like to program it first, then swap out the 820 for the legend, and have it just work properly. don't want the boss to yell at me cuz the phone's are dead.

thanks in advance,
tony

Quite a bit to answer..
First, you will save some money getting the ATL card. Legend phones that have been reliably refurbished by a good vendor are still fairly expensive. Do NOT buy cheap Legend phones off of E-Bay unless they are "DP" models. The older (non-DP) phones have a single-sided keypad membrane that goes bad frequently.
For your needs (a small system with a basic configuration) you should be able to do all of your programming through the 20L.
I would suggest getting the ATL card and using your BIS sets. That way you can buy a few Legend phones here and there and add them to the 408 cards as you feel like it and have a little extra money instead of buying a bunch of phones right off the bat.

paul,
thanks for your response.

in regards to you saying i should be able to program the system thru the 20L, i thought i read that also in one of the 500 manuals i downloaded from Avaya's site. but no dice, i only see how to program merlin mail thru the 20L.
i've been reading pdf's all morning and i don't see how to program the legend with the 20L.
any help on that ?

thanks,
tony

You can program the Legend with a set.It would be the first extension jack on the MLX board unless they moved it to one of the other first 5. Your manual will show both tel and pc programming steps.

i just plugged the 20L into each port and the screen shows the time/date in each port.

will it show something different when connected to the admin port ?

could the previous owner have deleted the admin port and only allowed the SPM interface via pc to do the job ?

or do you dial some extension when you pick up the 20L to access the service menu?

hope i'm not a pita.....

thanks,
tony

hey guys, should i do a system erase on this legend ? i don't know the previous password, if there even is any.

would doing the system erase get rid of any security measures that were there from the previous owner and allow me to start fresh ?

thanks,
tony

Its great that you are taking the time to read the manual. I suggest doing that rather than continuing to ask questions here, cause at some point you will not get anymore answers from these guys. (basically putting them out of a job by doing this yourself)
Programming by the phone is A LOT easier than via computer, actaully the software is a picture of the phone, that bascially mimics doing it via the phone. plus your a whopping 2400 baud or something stupid like that.
That being said, yes I would default the system out, its easier to start from default and build than trying to change what may or may not be already programmed.
