Hello, i got what is probably an easy question for you Pros. My company has an Inuity Audix 4.4 phone system for our phone & voicemail needs. I just started as the IT guy, but my expertise is in computers & networking, not telephones.
All the phones run through this sytem, except we have some devices (fax, old modems, etc...) that do not use RJ-45 jack, but use the standard RJ-11 jacks. I was wondering how this is done. Is there an analog (wired) system that runs side by side with the digital (wired) system, or can i just take any RJ-45 cable, and use only 4 of the wires to make it into and RJ-11 jack?
There is already many of these analog jacks within the building, but i need to know how to make more if needed. Any info you could give would be very helpfull.

An analog device such as a modem or fax only uses the center two pins (4 and 5) on either an RJ-11 or RJ-45. The white/blue-blue/white pair is normally wired to these pins for either.
Usually not good for an 8-conductor jack to have a smaller line cord plugged into it. The outer pins can be damaged.

Do you know or understand 568a or 568b?
If so, any analog device will run on pins 4 and 5. Or the white/blue and blue/white pair.

I'm not a Definity guy so I might be showing my ignorance here but isn't the Intuity Audix a messaging system used with the Definity, not a phone system itself? I also think your phones might be 1 pair also but there are and were a lot of phones used with the Definity over the years.

It wasnt that i was going to plug a RJ-11 plug into a RJ-45 jack; i was going to take whatever wires from a RJ-45 cable (in the wall), and strip the wires needed and hardwire them to an RJ-11 jack. Thank you very much for the info, i did not know any of that. :toast:

Intuity Audix is strictly a voice messaging system. It can be tied to a Definity, Merlin Legend or Magix, and other systems. Telephones would be supported by the Merlin or whatever. The Audix is an adjunct to the phone system.

Now that I think about it I have seen it used with the IP Office to as far back as an old System 25. So a Definity would be only one possibility.

Take the blue pair of your cable and terminate it on the blue pair (or grn/ red ) of the RJ11 jack. The only differenc between the 568A and 568B jacks is the OR and GRN pairs are reversed. If your just connecting an analog line you dont have to worry about the other pairs.
