Well I may have found it. I found an old alarm panel in the other end of the building. The panel was still powered and connected to a dead phone line. Alarm no longer used so I disconnected and problems seems to have gone away. No idea how it could have been this as it happened on both lines.

Thanks a lot for all the advise, lots of great input

Have just ran into the same problem,it was an adt alarm panel and they require two sets of lines and if it sences that it has lost a signal will go into a brief mode until it is reestablished comm ,other tech had just installed a new pos system (digital existing)and the panel was fed through at the dmark and also through the digital system on the other set!so when the alrm panel tried to dial out,it would show l2 open and send a fax like signal,I found a free line at demark and changed the alarm systems line one to it and then isolated line two from the stores phones at the dmark for alarm line two, isolating it from the digital system (I only have 3 lines avail)
I let corperate know this was temp only, called the alarm co and gave them the new #'s,problem temp solved.....

The problem is that the Alarm line MUST run from the Demarc TO the alarm panel, and then RETURN on a different pair. You can then connect whatever you want to the return pair, including the POS system. When you "changed the alarm systems line one", did you verify that you were connecting the RJ-31X jack up properly?

Because it will be a great liability to you and your employer if there is a fire and the alarm is unable to dial out due to something using the line ahead of the panel.

Could be a multiple. We have that a LOT down around Maple and Oak Lawn area of Dallas where there are not enough wire pairs.

What I did was take one of the two pair(four conductor red/blue black/ yellow ) coming from the alarm panel (line #! ) and landed one pair (red/blue) at the demark on a dedicated line. I then took the two pair coming from the alarm panel (line #2 ) and terminated it at the demark (red/blue)to a line I have temp isolated at the demark.and terminated one pair,I then had contacted the alarm co. and gave them the new primary number and the second phone number, this stopped the alarm from repetedly going into alarm mode and dialing every 1/2 to 1 1/2 hours. This was to be temp only ,they had asked me to return and remove the digital phone system and complete the repairs,I advised that I required another #,due to the pos/dsl/ems/phone card machine/cc machine /alarm system and fax all were on two lines,I just stubled across the third line which was abandoned/dedicated to a non-used jack (they didnt know they had)I also noticed upon arrival that the alarm would contin cycle ..sounded like a couple of relays on/off on/ off then nothing then the same
