I've also seen some systems that need 2 or 3 filters in series to cut out all the DSL noise or to allow enough DSL signal to get to the modem. Mostly NEC and the free SBC filters.

I agree it is normally a bad idea to share a fax and CO input on a KSU. The only way I would ever do that is if the fax is through an ATA to show users that that line is "in use." A DSL line though can be shared between the modem and the KSU as long as a filter is installed. In my area Bell will attach the DSL to whatever line is going through a digital switch on their end. They try the fax line first but it may end up on a voice line. I also agree that there is a big difference in quality of filters. A good buttset will prove this during the install.

If the fax is not connected through the KSU, what I usually do is connect the KSU to the phone port of the fax. This will work like putting in line share devices. So one can not interrupt the other.

All filters are not created equal. A DSL filter must create high impedance to the DSL signal. This will prevent any of the DSL signal from going into the filter and all of the signal will go from the line to the DSL modem or from the modem to the line. I have some filters that have low impedance on the “telephone†side of the filter. If the filter is wired backwards (telephone side to line and line side to telephone) the filter will absorb some of the DSL. This will prevent the DSL from working.
