in the old days we had a unit that plugged into the smdr port on a telephone unit that the administrator controlled and could print reports from.now i understand they are no longer available and that software progras on pc's are used. does anyone know what these programs are and/or where they are available?

Depends on what your are looking for as far as reports go and what type of phone system you have.
On the Partner and Magix systems you can properly connect a serial printer to the SMDR port and get raw call data for each call coming in or going out on the system.
But if you want to run a report at the end of the month to see how many times 555.555.5555 called you last month then you would need a call accounting software program.
The software makes it quicker and easier to collect the info you need. Instead of having to manualy look at the print outs.
