I have an IP 406 with 2 T1 lines connected. When I send out or recieve faxes through my IP406 (using an Analog trunk) my faxes end up garbled. Sometimes I only get an inch of fuz at the top (like when a TV is on but not tuned to a channel). I also get sporadic dropped calls throughout the day. I noticed it after I upgraded from 2.1 to 3.1. The upgrade went just fine. I just downgraded back to 2.1 to see if that helps. It's been 20 minutes. It was clean to start with and now the faxes are beginning to get garbled again.

It sounds like that for some reason after the original upgrade that your T1'S are no longer clocking properly . Which is causing slips and framing errors on the T1'S. Faxes and modems are more susceptible to these errors than voice conversations . But if the slips/framing loses occur often enough voice calls will be dropped . If you can't pull digital trunk stats from your own system contact your T1 provider and have them run a circuit performence monitor for an hour or two .

I agree sounds like slips, check your clocking, if you have slips it will be your trouble not the providers.

My provider agreed that it was a timing/clock issue. I only have a high level understanding of that. I don't really understand what that means or how to fix it. Any ideas? Thanks for your help.

You should be clocked off your provider. Sometimes called slaved or secondary timing. I'm very surprised your provider even checked for slips, they usually don't.

Thank you for all your help. I apologize but I am not very familiar with how to set the clock. The only clock setting I can find is setting up the line in manager. It gives three options: network, fallback, and unsuitable. How do I get clocked off the provider?

I am not familiar with your particular piece of equipment, I am with T1's. If the options you're talking are in your T1 options I'd say network, but wait for someone to respond who's worked on this system. It must be a software option as you state that is all you changed. I would think slaved timing would be the default, but it obviously isn't.

Thanks for you help, justbill. The option I am referring to is a software setting in my IPOffice 406. The manager program. It might not even be the right clock, but it is the only option I can find. If anyone knows IPOffice and can help, I would appreciate it.
Thanks

Set the clocking to network. Reboot, then power off the IPOffice. Upon returning power the system will test the T-1 clock and sync to that source. You have to power off the IPO to set this. It will not test during the reboot. I highly reccommend you keep the latest release available, it fix's many issues and upgrades will not be free after March 15th. This sync problem will be addressed in future upgrades but for now the IPO cannot recover without a cold start.
