I have a question about what I need to know before replacing a laptop screen.
Have a problem with the screen's colors being extremely garbled and fuzy intermitantly. want to replace the screen with another to troubleshoot.
is it similar to replacing the monitor on a PC?(as long as the Graphic card supports the reselution everything fine? are connectors standard?

No, connectors are not standard. Even some of the same model of a laptop can change LCD screens between production runs.

Great so swapping out is not very likely, and I priced some screens and they are more than what the laptop is worth!

I am having a problem with the screen on my thinkpad and I found that the screen is lit by a thin florescent bulb . I found a online tutorial on replacement and a source for the bulbs .
I bought one but I havent had a chance to install it yet.
bulb was around 30.00
what laptop are you trying to repair ?

I'd do what chrislebeck said first. I grafted a A21m screen onto a A21e, different size but it's been working for the last 4.5 years. Download a manual before you try to take that apart tho...

Took a Toshiba Tecra screen off once, never looked right once I put it back together. Off course, I moved houses in the middle of the repair, so that might have had something to do with it...

I tink might've fixed it!
Not sure of the brand of laptop. First off, The laptop was hooked up to a monitor, so that ruled the video card out (mostly). Jiggling the wire to the screen did no good either. the ribbon cable was wrapped in a screen type tape. I un wound it partial ly, looking for any pinched wires. I didn't find any, but in doing so I haven't had the screen act up since. I had reseated all connectors at the screen, but that didn't seem to help. I didn't attempt to get to the video card to get to that connector (cooling fans were too much of a pain to remove).
Thanks for the input, would be nice if they standardized these things a bit though.
