I have a customer that is part of the NJ state government, they have a Merlin Plus that about 3 times a month the first 5 extension go dead.
I shut the system down and reseat the 1st station board, nothing....I unlug the 5 cables and replug them back and everything is fine...
They are under budget restraints (welcome to NJ politics) so they wont spring for a rebuilt or replace the cards....
Is the problem narrowed down to the card or KSU
Thanks, Mitch

I have seen that before Mitch with regular Merlins, but electrically, they are petty much the same. It turned out that there was corrosion at one jack that was creating enough of a fault on the power pair to cause the card to overheat. Apparently, they are powered in groups of five stations, but I can't say for sure. That sounds like your problem too because of the fact that you mentioned that once the cables are unplugged and plugged back in, they come back up. I think unplugging allows the fault to be removed and the circuit cools off and resets, until next time. That's my guess.

We took one out of a doctors office about a month ago that was doing the same thing. We up-graded them to a ACS R.7.
My quess is it is proably a bad card. I have some extras.................if you would like I can send you one to trouble shoot with. The system was a 820.

GS, I agree with Ed, that happens when one cable goes bad. Unplug one cable at a time when you hit the bad one the system comes back on line.

The owner ran his own flat cable right to the phones ,The owners wife took in stray dogs.
Found 2 dogs under her desk chewing on the wire removed her jack system fine.

Sometimes the system won't come back up without cycling the power when disconnecting stations one by one. Better to disconnect all the stations, restart the switch, then connect them one by one until it fails. The one you connected just before the failure is the bad one.

I'll play around in about a week when they call me again. The customer is The Division of Youth Services here in NJ and like everything else they are last on the list to get funding for a new system...(welcome to my world)......
I should be getting another call in about a week as scheduled, I will play around then.
Thanks all.......Mitch
