This means your telco's central office equipment cannot support a PRI type of NI2. I ran into this in Wisconsin a few months back. The AT&T central office switch supported only DMS100 emulation and not NI2 and couldn't provide inbound caller ID name.

I have not heard of a DCS500 switch, but I have heard of the DMS500. These are usually used by competitive local exchange carriers in the U.S. Are you using the local provider or a competitor to provide your service? Most locals use the DMS10, 100 or occasionally a 500 in larger areas. Of course, locals also use several other different brands.
Does your Avaya system allow settings for "national" instead of "NI2"? That might be worth a try. I have also seen with many phone systems that if you can toggle between name and number display, you might get what you need.
Steven, I can't say that I have ever heard of the situation you encountered with the site in Wisconsin. Was it an actual AT&T (Lucent) 5ESS switch or was it just one owned by the new "at&t" (formerly SBC/Pacbell/Ameritech/Wisconsin Bell/whatever)? Rembember that the AT&T (at&t) name is officially nothing but a name, not a brand any more.
I always have thought that AT&T (Lucent) 5ESS switches pretty much set the standard for NI2 support. Then again, I think that they might not be as popular in Canada as Nortel's DMS for obvious reasons.
I would tend to think that the site you encountered was in "at&t" territory but is not served by an AT&T (Lucent) switch. Maybe it is just a DMS or maybe a Siemens ESWD, which are very popular with former Bell companies, hence the NI2 emulation issue you encountered. Lots of former Bell companies are now using central office switches from other manufacturers.

You are right it is a DMS500. It is a Nortel product. The local telco says that Nortel does not have the support people in Canada for Ni2 protocol on a PRI. This why I can not get both caller name and number on the display.
I will look at the setting to "NAtional" as a option.
