I have a customer that has a Partner ACS with 4 lines...

They have no fax or CC hooked up to the system, yet intermittently they get a fax/modem type squelch on inbound calls on various lines...

Tech support has suggested

a) Its the Caller ID information, and if you wait til the second ring to answer, it won't happen

b) The processor is going bad

B) seems MUCH more plausable than A)...

Any other thoughts before we replace a processor?

Maybe I'm not understanding you correctly...

Are you saying that their phone rings, they pick up the phone and hear fax tones? I would assume that someone is just miss dialing to their line trying to send a fax. I am also a switchboard operator and I get this every single day. If the can, take that live fax tone call, transfer the call to a fax line and find out who is faxing. Chances are it's either a telemarketing solicitation or someone receiving a legitimate fax to the wrong number.

Actually, I have ran into the caller ID problem multiple times. Its alot more common than you would think. Rhonda's suggestion would be another option to see if it really is a fax.

Incoming FAX tone is the "CNG" tone, which is a simple beep, repeated at about 2 second intervals.

CID is a FSK screech send between the 1st and 2nd rings. Does the display show CID if you wait for the 2nd ring before answering?

On the Acs the backup restore card has a modem for remote programing sta.76 look to see if it is set to ring on incomming lines. It will answer and give you a squelch tone.

I have seen this happen with caller ID on Partner Systems. What I tried and worked to solve the noise was a loop current regulator form Mike Sandman.
