I need to hookup SMDR on a Merlin 820D or Merlin Plus. DO I need only a 355AF connector or do I need a special data collector to make this work, obviously apart from programming. I guess what I am asking is the hardware portion of the SMDR. Programming is a breeze, I just forgot what's needed regarding the hardware.

I have the book. The question is do I need the data collector or will I get raw data without the CU (data Coillector.

The data collector changes a System port (ext 19) to an SMDR port. without it you won't get anything
