My office has a Lucent 8410D DIGITAL OFFICE PHONE.
If I purchase a second phone, exactly the same, can I get a splitter and plug them both into the same outlet?
Obviously this could be done with a normal analog phone, but I'm wondering whether this is a different story?
Actually, I don't need any advanced features for the second phone, just the ability to dial out.

A local Avaya Business Patner would be your best best. Start here: https://mywebtools.avaya.com/bplocator/start.swe?SWECmd=Start You may already have a live jack somewere in your office. Have you tried to plug a 8410D phone into another jack to see if you get dial tone?

I work in a govt office and was able to get another phone from surplus. But we have no money for hiring anyone. The woman who shares my office has to walk over to my desk to make a call. I was hoping somehow to add a phone onto her desk, sharing the same outlet. There are no other outlets in the office. I'm pretty handy with electronics, but from the way y'all are talking it sounds like this is impossible.

Yes, unfortunately so. Digital station ports, or even analog ones can't be shared on most systems. I would offer to assist, but it sounds as if your hands are tied financially.
Is a Wal*mart cordless phone on the system via an analog station port a possible option? So often, there are abandoned modem extensions or even CO lines sitting around. It's worth looking into. I suppose anything is better than your current situation.

Captain, maybe we need to all email the White House and ask GWB if he can ask congress to approve a MAC order for your office. Don't tell the vendor your a Govt office they just charge you extra. Like 250.00 dollars for a hammer? Tell your governemnt to do business with the small business man and see how much money it saves us all.
