I was once paid driving, flying, sleeping and eating , rental car and a left behind ladder bought for the job, to go Dodge City Kansas to install a Meritor 2464 w/ 4 phones in a USDA office at the cattle yards. CCA sold them the system w/installation costs to be T&M. The Govs got plenty of money, you just need to know who can get to it. It had a remote modem (big deal 1988). The contract was for 28 or 26k. Now thats margin!! The office was a rat hole. A rat hole with 4 new IBM networked computers and matching laserjet for each computer and a throwdown Meritor phone system, all executive sets.

I'm pretty handy with electronics, but from the way y'all are talking it sounds like this is impossible. Don't get me wrong, I believe you, but this story is completely funny AND stupid all at the same time. A gov't office with no money? An office that can afford an Avaya PBX but can't afford a MAC? One thing in the country the Republicans have NOT funded. Call your Senator. Wait, you're in DC ... call Marion Berry. You either need a new cable installed or split a pair off of the existing cable, and rewire the jack to accomadate the new port. Of course it will then need to be cross-connected in the phone room to an active port. Oh, and you'll need someone to program the phone.... Call a technician in your area. Though when you mention you don't have any money, well, the service level may be adversly affected... Richard

While the government does have billions to waste, some employees can buy things and some can't. The fact that this guy is sharing an office suggests that he can't. He probably has no authority to start mucking around in the phone closet either, if he wants to keep his job.
I thought ev607797 gave a good response. It also occurred to me to just get a phone splitter and try it and see. Also some digital phones have a modem or data or fax port you can plug a plain old telephone into.

They may have had money once in the budget but they sure don't now. I realize this sad fact every other Friday.
Not only that, but I doubt they'd authorize anything official. The last wiring we did pulling the line to my office in the first place was a little over $1000.
Anyway, this may be off-the-wall stupid, but couldn't this be wired like a three-way light bulb with two switches. The one of us who wants to use the phone, flicks a switch, sending the phone line to our phone and disconnecting the other phone? Then vice-versa if the other needs to use the phone?

I think a three-way switch would work. You deserve a promotion.
For those who don't know, the federal government payday is every other Friday. Every year the federal government distributes a calendar showing each payday in green and federal holidays in red. This calendar hangs on the wall in front of many federal workers, right under the clock.

Let's bring this back to the centerline. The original post asked if there was a way to achieve his goal. Budget concerns are not a debate for this thread.

Your office is seriously big enough that you can't put one phone between the two of you and share it? Since you're going to have to go to the switch and flip it before using the phone, just put a long line cord on it, pull it over to your desk and use it. Let your coworker do the same.
Honestly, I expected better from the world's most renowned phone phreak.
