Using the settings specified in Avaya Partner Messaging documentation, I am unable to successfully connect to the RS232 port using hyperterminal in WinXP. A connection is established, but hitting the enter key just returns garbled text as such:

x~x~~~x~~~x~~~x~~~x~~~x~~~x~~~x~~~x~~~x~~~x~~~x~~~x~~~x~~~x~~~x~~~x~~~x~~~x~~~x~

However, I am able to successfully connect to the ACS using the PC Administration software and retrieve/backup configurations. What am I doing wrong?

I always connect through the LAN port to do programing. Have you tried it?

Yeah I just did and all I get is a blank screen. According to the diagram for the directions in the Partner Messaging R7 manual, the D8W(i'm using CAT5) cable connects to the RS-232 port on the front of the Partner Messaging module.

How are you connecting the 8 pin port on the PM to your computer's serial port?

I saw a posting on another forum with the default IP 10.0.0.42 and subnet 255.255.255.0 for Partner Messaging R1. Are the settings the same for R7? Once I'm able to connect, where do I find the login and password?

That info is in the documentation. Do you have that?

Thanks Hal, 19200 worked. I tried every other baud rate except for that, go figure, and the manual says to use 38400.

Merlin Messaging uses 38400, I think the Partner manual is wrong, they just did a cut-n-paste job on it.
