I may have inadvertantly discovered how the I+J software patches solve the battery problem with the memory.

I put in an R7 with a 308 and Messaging on Friday. When we tested Ext. 19, the 1st extension on the 308, it had no audio. Plugged the phone directly into the expansion module, and same problem. So, figured we had a bad 308.

Also noticed that the voice mail's light was alternating Green and Yellow. Having had bad modules cause problems with other modules downstream, we pulled the 308, put the Messaging in slot 1, reprogrammed the VM ports, and figured to come back on Tuesday with the replacement 308.

Tuesday, I put the 308 in the 1st slot, the Messaging back in slot 2, reprogram the VM ports, and check Ext. 19. It's fine, but the VM is doing the same blinking thing.

For grins I swap the VM and good 308's slots. The VM works fine in the 1st slot, but the 308 in the 2nd slot has its light blinking off and on.

Rats! Now it's either the carrier or the ACS itself.

This morning, I come back with a carrier and a brand-new-in-the-box R7. Pull the original R7 out of the carrier and power it up directly with the power cord, so the phones can keep working while I sort out what's bad.

I pulled the Remote Access/Backup Card out of the original ACS, put it in the new one, put the 308 and Messaging in their slots, and the new R7 in the center slot. Power it up, and all the lights behave themselves.

Figure I should program the VM ports so I can test the voice mail before deciding that the processor was the problem.

Imagine my suprise when I find that the system is ALREADY PROGRAMMED! I haven't done a restore from the card yet! But it is programmed exactly as if I had done a restore.

So my theory is that Avaya added some code to the bootup process that does an automatic restore. It may have some conditions written in it, such as if it comes up with the default date/time, look to the internal and external memory for the latest image to load. I think I read somewhere that the Internal memory is written automatically whenever you go into System Programming.

So, long story made short (yeah, I know, too late for that), I'm going to do a bit of experimentation when it's slow in the shop, but this is just bizarre!

I have noticed the R.7's take longer to boot up. So that would make your theory seem very possible.
