Hello.

I have a very important question here because of all the hurricanes concerns.

If a building looses power however the phone system and T1 circuit card are both plugged into a UPS supported by a generator as well as the Central Office has power.

Should the voice service continue to work or is there another piece to the network which might not get power.

In other words, can you support phone service with a generator if your CO has power?

Thanks.

T1's are line powered so yes they will continue to work until the flooding. smile
I can make fun on this because Wilma was a small storm and still half the state is without phone service and/or power. Doesnt matter much if the phones are up if the people cant get to work or the power poles are blown over.

If the T-1 is installed via fiber the network equipment will need to get electrical power from the site not phone company.

In my situation, I'm talking about the entire city block loosing power with

1. Everything in the phone closet connected to a UPS being recharged by generators

2. CO up and running (maybe on generators also)

3. CO Network intact.

So everyone is saying that voice service should work in this situation? Is there phone related infrastructure/equipment outside of the building (between office and CO) that might loose power and cause the voice service on a T1/PRI to loose connection?

This hurricane Wilma on Halloween has got me super paranoid now

Thanks

Depending on your distance from the CO there are often repeaters or doublers in the loop. These are line powered as well.

If all 3 conditions you list above are met, you should be fine.

The majority of the T1 multimounts we typically encounter (1,2 & 4 position) do not require additional AC power. However, there are some of the larger mounts that do need AC.

Like Kyle said, If those repeaters loose power you are dead in the water. Happens down here quite often, severe rain storm comes thru, manholes flood, bammo, no T1 or PRI for that matter...

I worked for a place once that wanted to be covered in a situation like this. What we did was to order 2 PRI's from carrier XYZ. One was connected to a CO in town A and the other to a CO in town B. If you looked at it on a map it would look like this.

CO A-------------My office-----------CO B.

So if you "take out" a pole between my office and CO A, we could still talk to CO B. You may also want to look into multiple points of entry for your building with multiple dmarks on oppisite ends of the building.
