I just had my 3rd business within a week and the same area call me for FAX problems. They all have simular problem, incoming FAX some work some don't. Eveyone can FAX out OK but some businesses can't FAX in. The incoming calls that can't connect seem to be all long distance in and out of state. The senders say they are not having problems, telco says they don't know why. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Are the fax machines using a port off a phone system?

I had one a few years ago do me the same way.
Customer could fax out, but incoming would not go thru at all.
You could talk on that line with no proplem. Clear has a bell.
After about the 4th or 5th time calling the service provider they said they found the problem and it went away.

Are they all coming out of the same CO? Could there be some sort of data compression? Down here SBC only guarantees 2400 baud.

Have seen this multiple times. It ranges from lines delivered via T1 and broken out on analog channel banks that had slips(would allow voice but no modem or fax), AT&T local service had calls that we could not send or receive from 1 nxx in San Antonio (turned out to be this nxx office was connected via VOIP trunks for cost savings and could not be completed via analog to VOIP transfer) and alternative carriers not having the updated nxx office codes in their data base. Have the customer that expresses trouble try to dial the fax via regular telephone to see if call completes. That will tell if you are dealing with a routing or transmission problem. From there you can pinpoint the trouble.

Its a tranmission trouble as the sending ends rings in and the FAX answers the line, takes a long time but will say its receiving. According to logs it will try at 9600 then work it way down to 2400 then disconnect. The line supplier is a small company that also has internet. My office is in their area and I know that they have been having issues with replacing security software for the internet. If they receive calls via VOIP could this upgrade be causing the FAX problems.

Loop current ( too high or too low) can cause similar problems.
