Hopfully someone here can help me pretty quickly. Here is the deal. I am adding another phone to my system. I have added the new line to the 66 block connected my Butt Set, checked for dial tone, and confirmed that there is one. Connected the phone to the other end and nothing. I then connected my Validator to it, and verified tone. Connected a single line phone to the new line and immediately got Dial Tone. Connected my multiple line phone and nothing, LED Screen will not even light up. I thought it might be the phone, so I connected the phone to a working line and it worked perfectly. I then connected a known working phone to the new line and got nothing there. I have a 3 ATT Partner Expansion slots, with 23 extentions, what in the world could be the issue.

I am not in over my head. I am a Network Engineer and have been for over 14 years. I designed the entire phone system and have been using it for years. What I am doing is adding a phone in my lobby. I am using ATT Expansion Slots, for a total of 6 lines using 23 extensions. All I am doing is adding a phone, using a ATT multi-line phone. Again I have Dial Tone at the 66 block at my cross over, I have dial tone using a regular one line phone, and I can dial out. When I hook the Multi-line phone, I get no Dial Tone, nor does the phone operate at all (meaning no ligts or power to the phone) The phone works seeing that I tested it on a working line. I also validated the line showing no shorts, and receiving Volts. Anyone else have any comments?

Hmmm. Now that I am thinking about it, I believe my crossover I only used 1 pair, but the partner uses 2 Pair.Meaning I am not getting the correct Voltage to power the phone. Would that be it?

Mr. djboston.
We must know what system your dealing with before we can help you.
But then what you are asking is beyond the user end doc's.
Being an engineer you would know that to be true.

Geeze, as a network engineer this should be a piece of cake for you, no?

Apparently the T/R pair (pins 3&4) is working, that's why you get dial tone with a SL phone. Now check the second pair that carries data and power, pins 2&5 for open, short or continuity to ground. (Don't rely on a volt meter.) Carefully check your punch downs and cross connects. Without the second pair a system phone will be dead.

I also assume that you are testing by plugging the system phone into the same port on the system that you are using for the new extension. If you were to short the second pair even momentarily, the power on that port will shut down creating the symptoms you describe.

This is about all the assistance we can give you.

Thank you. Once mentioned bout the second pair, bells and alarms went off in my head. I am so used to using just One pair most of the time I did it out of habit. 2 & 5 are open on the new block

Did't you look at the other 22 hooked up extensions and wonder why they had 2 pairs wired up and your new one only had one?

Hmmmm let's see !! Red on Red, Black on Black...where's all that smoke coming from.
When I worked for the Bell System in the old day's..engineers were the most dangerous thing in the world when they had a tool in their hands.
Good Luck !!!
