I got a call about 4 phones that were "ticking". I pluged a phone directly into the legend module and I get no dial tone on the first 4 ports ,so I figure bad card. I happen to have an old 008 card ( yes for Merlin phones! ) So I replace the card everything looks ok, then the switch goes off. I tried turning it off then on ,no go!! So I figure this module is worst than the old one. After a week of looking I found a referb, pluged this one in everything looked fine , all phones were working. As I was packing up to leave ,the switch went dead again!!! Put the old module in , works ok (except 4 phones ) Im already talking upgrade (Legend R5.0 to at least R7.0 ,I think a magix would be to much to wish for) but as for this problem . Any ideas ? thanks in advance.

Well sir, You didn't say if this was a MERLIN II or a LEGEND R1 or R2, but I'd be willing to bet that's what you are dealing with.
This may or may not help, but here's my idea.
1) Remove the PROCESSOR 2) Remove the "DOOR" on the Side of the PROCESSOR (You know, the one with the 2 wire handles) 3) Place it CHIP SIDE UP on a HARD LEVEL surface. 4) Press in on EACH AND EVERY ONE of those SOCKETED CHIPS WITH BOTH OF YOUR THUMBS ON EACH CHIP. (REALLY PUSH THEM IN!)
If you feel/hear any of them "CLICK" or "SNAP", be very happy.
Now, put the whole mess back together and see what happens.
If it works, and continues to work, GOOD.
If not, I think you are at 3rd and long....
Let us know....

One thing to consider. If you upgrade to Magix, you can't use ATL (Merlin) Modules. Also on the ATL modules the ports are somehow tied together in groups of 4. A bad phone or wire run can take out itself and the three other ports in that group of 4. Once you unplug the bad cord/phone, the other 3 will sometimes come back to life. To test your module, I would unplug all 4 wires then plug in a KNOWN good phone into the 1st port. If the set comes up, plug a wire into the 2nd port, test for dial tone on the 1st set. If you lose dial tone, then check the phone and wire plugged into port 2. If you still have dial tone then plug into port 3 and retest the phone in port 1 etc...

blklabs, it's been so long since I worked on one of these, I totally forgot that issue.
So I would recommend doing first blklabs suggestion, and if that doesn't fix it, try my trick.

Another thing to check is the station sets or the cabling on the 4 affected sets. I'll bet one of them has a problem. Probably a shorted data or power pair.
