I know that the DMS-500 has the ability to generate a milliwatt tone on trunks. I don't know if the 5E does.

John,
I have Brooktrout DID analog trunk cards in our fax server. Since they are analog, you should be able to put/bridge a butt set across the line in monitor mode and listen in. It's not high tech but you should be able to hear any hum, static, digits being sent, etc...
I think Cantada bought Brooktrout or visa versa...
