I've posted this problem on this board previously but I still haven't been able to resolve it. I've got a customer that has a Merlin Legend R7 that has a mix of MLX and MLS phones (8 MLX,63 MLS). The customer ordered several MLS phones from a reseller after I added 2 ETR modules to the system. The problem is this; I've got one office that none of the new MLS phones will work there, yet when I connect one of the older phones that was part of the original installation, it works fine. If I put the new phone at the old phone location it does not work. Yet, when I connect the new phones to logical ID 64/65, it works. When I connect directly to the ports, same results. When I do a printout with new phone connected to the port, it indicates unassigned. With older phone, printout reads ETR-18D as it should. I've rebooted the system, manually programmed port for ETR, busied out and restored but I get same results. I've worked on Legends since they were introduced but I cannot figure this one out. Any suggestions?

In order to support that many MLS sets, you must have at least (4) 016ETR boards in the system. There may be a load problem with that many "high density" boards in conjunction with 18D sets, especially if they all sit in a single carrier.
Would you please post a slot inventory?

I'm not at the customer site right now. Off the top of my head; (Carrier 1) 1)008 MLX 2)800 GS/LS/ID 3)800GS/LS/ID 4)016ETR 5)007 MLM (Carrier 2) 1)016ETR 2)016ETR 3)016 ETR 4)016ETR 5)800GS/LS/MLS.
Keep in mind that when I connect one of the existing phones to the port, it works fine.

OK Larry, here's what I've got:
Slot Board 00 Processor 01 008 MLX 02 800 GLID 03 800 GLID 04 016 ETR 05 007 MLM
37.5 total unit load for carrier #1
06 016 ETR 07 016 ETR 08 016 ETR 09 016 ETR 10 800 GLID 11 (empty)
96.0 total unit load for carrier #2
Minimally, you'll need a 391C1 power supply to support the boards in the second carrier. You can identify a 391C1 power supply by the following characteristics: (a) it does NOT have a gray jack between the power switch and the power LED and (b) the power switch toggles from left to right. But even with that power supply, the second cabinet could still be overloaded!
Given the current config, your switch can support up to (80) ETR/MLS sets. However, you report that only (63) MLS sets are in service. That means that you've either got an unnecessary 016 ETR board in the second carrier, or that there are other phones you're attempting to heat up that you haven't yet mentioned.
The bottom line is that you're right at the edge of a supported configuration, which may be the source of your problem. Is there any way to configure the switch so that the 016 ETR board in Slot #9 can be removed?

I'll double check the configuration when I'm back out on site. I know that I can eliminate the 800 GLID in slot 10. They had ordered that board with the intentions of adding more lines but they changed their mind. The load imbalance is something worth considering, but what puzzles me is why I can get the phone I swapped from the initial installation to work. ??? Oh well, thanks. Whatever I find, I will be sure to post on the board so no one else has to go through this.

The 800 GLID has a load rating of zero. While pulling this board out makes sense in terms of preserving slot real estate, it's presence does not effect the total load on the carrier's power supply.
I too am baffled by the behavior of old versus new MLS sets. All I know is that switch functionality becomes tenuous when a cabinet reaches a total unit load of 96. Also, some configurations are not supported even if the carrier falls within that load restriction.
For example, you are limited to three high-density (016 or 024) boards in a single carrier IF more than 50% of the sets are large multi-button telephones. Since you have more than three 016 ETR boards in a single carrier AND more than 50% of the attached phones are ETR-18 or MLS-18, this rule applies.
Yank that last 016 ETR if you can.
