typically cell phones work very high 800 mhz to many ghz ranges.

Mmmm no, not that I know of. I believe all cell phones are in the 800Mhz range and a maximum of something like 0.3W ERP. That's why I can't see where there would be a big difference between phones.

Yes, they always communicate periodically with the network any time they are powered on, the newer ones probably sending GPS information for your location. Even if the phone is turned off it can be remotely turned on to locate you so if you are on the lam and don't want the cops to find you be sure to remove the battery!

Hal, you're right on the power. The old bag phones could put out a full 3W, but all handhelds are limited to 0.3W. Analog phones use 850MHz, but the newer digitals use 900, 1800, & 1900 MHz. Bluetooth uses 2400 MHz, but with most phones you need to turn on the bluetooth before it transmits. The noise you hear is the digital signals from the phone. In the days of mainframe computers, you could set an AM radio on top of the CPU and tell what the computer was doing by the sound on the radio.

Handheld cellphones put out 0.06 of a watt. Or 6 tenths of a watt.

And yes I have had my phone which is cingular also.

A Motorola V551 do the same.

Cause my pc screen to screw up and anything in the surrounding area. Even an PBX.

Right. The government actually went to great extremes (Tempest) to shield the rooms and cables associated with their machines that held sensitive information. They realized that the RFI from these things could be intercepted from a distance and information could be compromised.

Did many jobs where we had to use optical isolaters between rooms and window vibrators and push to talk handsets.. People have no idea what spurious radiation is. You could actually stand in the parking lot of high rise buildings and point parabolic dish antennaes at the appropriate window and pick up conversations.

All that talk about cell phones making people lose their minds has to be nonsense. George Bush is on a high power scrambling cell phone probably ten hours a day and you don't think it has affected him now do you?

My cell phone makes my Telrad beep right before it rings, but doesn't affect the monitor at all.
Its a Kyocera w/Verizon, so unless Cingular is doing different, I can't get mine to do anything wierd.

I have a LG cell model number LX5550 from Alltel (the purple one).
Thought I would have some fun with the predictive ringing but no luck.
Turned in on and off and answered a call with the cell next to my monitor and got nothing.
Guess I am safe to carry it in my pocket. smile
