We do have a single line phone in the closet with the phone patch bays and Adtran. I'll have the service guy show me what to do. I don't see any free RJ-11 jacks to plug into.

I have been looking into the cost of purchasing a new "real" system, but we are on a very tight budget.

With only one phone connected, I did switch lines (two sets of pairs to each phone) to see if it was the phones, but the problem shifted with the cables, so I'm pretty sure the problem it isn't in phones, but it could be a faulty contact on the patch bay, but I get confused trying to figure out how they wired it up.

As I recall, the RE is not the issue, LOOP CURRENT would be the issue.

The 854 uses a change in the LOOP CURRENT to determine which LED to light or extinguish when a certain phone is off hook.

It should be around 25 or so Milli amps. If it is much more or much less, your 854's won't work properly.

To measure this, you would need a Volt Ohm Meter that can measure MA's and then you would have to put it in series with ONE SIDE of the Line.

Then, when you went off hook on that line, you could see if they are giving you too much or too little LOOP CURRENT.

So, you may want to ask the provider how much LOOP CURRENT does the ADTRANS provide. I doubt if they will have a clue however.

The thought does occur, for three lines why not switch back to copper? Am I correct in assuming that your phone problems started with the installation of that T1? I know it's not going to help when your data drops out but at least your phones will work.

I would wager that the loop is dirty and taking errors.
