To All; Yesterday after some personnel at our company left, I tried to remote into my Avaya Partner ACS System from my Dell Inspiron Laptop as I have done a hundred times. I am using a 5 module system with 4 switches (one expansion card) and 1 Voice module. I am also using the Partner ACS Remote Access PC Card. My version is Partner ACS R6.0 CO1. After trying unsuccessfully for about two hours dialing in on Extension 11 at *76 , I was told repeatedly that the back end of the modem was not responding. I was not shown the usual connected and then enter your password screens. I rebooted after hours and still had the same problem. I have used this laptop to do this every time with no problem. I read on your site ( https://www.sundance-communications.com) that perhaps I should try R7.0 which I have done with the exact same error. I then read that I should try to set the modem at 1200bps which I did with the same results. I then again read that I should try another external modem, so I dug out a Motorola ModemSurfer that I had in a closet at home and tried it. Once I tried the Motorola it connected, stayed connected for about a minute and then disconnected. I then turned the settings down to 1200bps on this modem connected. It asked for my Password! I entered my Password as usual, and I got the “you have successfully connected to a Partner ACS R6 System (both R6.0 and R7.0)†and it stated connected at 14400bps? I was happy as I could then select Administration \ Retrieve system information just like I always do to make a back up before I change the translation file. Now however, when I select “Remote backupâ€Â, “Retrieve System Translations†and “Retrieve Maintenance Data†just like I always do, I get errors. I do get the “Save as†prompt for both the translation file and the maintenance data file, and I name the file, but when I try to retrieve the information I get the errors. Specifically the error reads: “The system translation information was not successfully transferred from the PARTNER system. The incomplete image file has been discardedâ€Â. It is doing the remote backup 100% then it goes to the translation file waits at 0% for minutes and then states the error. I thought that the remote card was bad, but if this is the case why can I get in and at least backup the system? *I gave up on the remote system and dug out my Partner ACS Programming and Use manual and decided to just program everything from extension 11. This would have been fine except that the system takes the changes (changed numerous extensions to vacant) waits 15 minutes, blacks out (REBOOTING??) and then all the changes vanish. This is very frustrating, but now I am getting very worried that there is something seriously wrong with our system. Have any of your technicians seen this before and would you please be willing to help me with this problem? Ron Corrigan Network Administrator

If your ACS is rebooting on it's own, then yes, you either have a A/C power problem or you ACS has a problem. Do you have a little UPS you could put on the system to make sure it's not a A/C power problem?

I would lean toward an issue with the processor since you are losing programming. It sounds like something internal is failing and causing the NVRAM to lose power. Do you have good batteries in the ACS? If not , then it may actually be power related.

Ron, have you gone to all phones to make sure they work correctly? 'Departing' employees can do some nasty things in 'revenge'. You may have something messing with one of the ports that's driving the system bananas. First thing that comes to my mind is plugging line cord into 10base T port. John C.

Fisrt, sorry for the delay, I have not been in the office all week. Thank you all very much for the replies and the assistance.

I did not know if it was rebooting or what, I was just losing my changes after 15 or 20 minutes. It only happened twice so I guess I screwed something up like not hiiting enter. Yes, we have the system on its own UPS. Now my changes are applying with no issues. As you know we just changed the time on the whole system, and it applied with no problem. Back to the remote card itself?
Solstars stated: "I would lean toward an issue with the processor since you are losing programming" Thank you for the reply, but as I stated above it was probably user/programmer error.

Thank you for the reply. Although I do not believe that any of the employees here would do this, it is possible. They all have a way of ending up right back here over time. I may have been the one to do this myself? We have a mess with our patch panel. It is a combination of two seperate systems...Before my time they added numerous lines that go directly to our Networking Switches then to the Jacks. But, we still have the older part of the building that is actually routed to the punch down panel and then to the Partner ACS direct. I will check and see if somehow I stuck a cable in the wrong place, but would this make it so that extension 11 would no longer be able to dial in?
