No problem - that happens.
But yes, we need to know how close the client is to the ORIGINATION of this facility.

It sounds like a defective merlin set...given the age of the sets...it does happen. My question is how far is your customer from the CO????

im not sure how close the tel co is. i am going to call tomorrow to see what the tel co says. i may need to get some resistores and take care of it myself. today i checked the voltage on one of my lines and got the same reading about 8 to 10 volts off hook. but on hook it is 50. did i do the volt test wrong. but the loop current on my line checked out ok, just wanted to make sure my meter was ok. i will keep everyone posted what i find out. dave

One point to remember about Proximity to the CO - the cable doesn't run as the crow flies. Sometimes even if you're around the corner from the Exchange you've got a mile of cable between you and the frame.
It all depends on how the Outside Plant was built and how your circuit is cross connected.

I think this is all much to do about nothing. I'm going to agree with kenb. This is a vintage system that has been around the block so many times (with a walker) it has to be dizzy. I would look for a problem with one of those old phones, particularly if there are any with a membrane keypad, before I wasted my time anywhere else.

Yeah, but if he has 50ma of loop current a brand new system will do the very same thing after about 6 months. Been there and done that.
