I have a 406 and Voice Mail Pro, it's been running fine till last week when I started geting unable to connect to feature key server messages and voice mail would stop. System status would show no licenses.

A reboot of the VM server cures it for a few hours then it locks up again.

Only changes have been on the lan, A switch was replaced, now connects at a gigabit and a SonicWall firewall was installed.

Our Avaya Partner says it's the sonicwall but I do not understand how as both the 406 and the VM Server are on the same LAN so how could Sonicwall stop the communication if it does not go thru the Sonic wall. Sonicwall logs do not show any blocking activity on the I.P. addresses of the phone system.

So the questions
1 Can Sonicwall block lan connections
2 Could the new Gigabit switch cause problems

If the hardware changes happened at the same time as trouble began, I think that is significant. Generally a hardware firewall can't/won't stop internal traffic on the network. The new switch SHOULD be configured to match the IP406 network - 100 meg half-duplex. You could also have your business partner upgrade to serial feature key that goes onto the back of 406 - eliminating the problem.

I agree with Mike.
Hardware changes made and the problem arises.
Check the hardware config and have it match the old config and problem should be solved.

I am thinking it is the new switch, we have moved all the phonesys equipmnet back to the old switch and threw a patch cord between the new and old switches for now.

I am thinking it's a speed negotation problem with the new switch. Did this about an hour ago, will check back on it after it has 4 hours run time, hope thats it.

Will investigte the serial feature key with the partner next week, this is not the first time we have had license key problems. Last time it was after an upgrade, should have had the key moved then.

Will report back later, thanks for the help.

It's been 8 hours and it's still up with no license issues so I am thinking it's a speed negotation problem with the new gigabyte switch as I cannot see how Sonicwall could restrict lan communications that do not flow thru it.

The only connection the Sonicwall has is it is pluged into the same switch as the IP office equipment, I think of it as being "T" tapped into the system, but being it is plugged into a switch it should not even hear the traffic (as switches do not broadcast on all ports) much less filter it.

Will be looking into the serial key next week.

Will report back if anything bad happens

24 + hours and still running

Version 5.0 (20) on the 406-v2

Thanks for the help guys, I knew to look at the last thing fixed that broke something else.

Just looking for confirmation that it was more likely the Gigabit switch and not the Sonicwall

Going to do a little recabling to put all the phone equipment on the 406 switch that is now not being used. All equipment is on the network switch now, do not know why they did it thet way but they did.

When done I will have the VM Server and 3 Adtrans for the remote buildings all on the 406 switch then a cable from the 406 to the network switch. The caple to the network switch is only used for remote access.
