So I have a DCS-816 (I think it's the same as an iDCS616?) system which keeps restarting when more than one line is used simultaneously, and sometimes randomly. There are 10 or so handsets if this is relevant.

When restarting, all handsets display 'Ver 2.2 2003 4.30'. This is getting to be a pain, as we aren't able to answer more than one call without being cut off.

Does anyone have any idea what could be wrong, or can anyone point me in the right direction?

Typical power supply problem. As soon as too much power is drawn the system reboots. On the power supply right hand side is 2 capacitors. They should be flat on top. If they bulge up means they are damaged. Can be replaced with similar type and all good to go

Okay, thanks!

I read something similar elsewhere on the forums, but it said something about the power LEDs being dim, but they are not.

I will check the capacitors and get back to the thread.

I agree with samtoria change power unit or capacitors

I have checked the capacitors, and they don't seem too bulged up, but it could still be that they are slightly raised.

In any event, I have ordered a replacement power supply, and will install it.

Does anyone think this is *not* a power supply issue?

Also, will I lose my settings/programming during the course of changing the PS?

You will only loose your settings if the super cap/battery is stuffed.

if you power off for 5-10mins now do you loose programming?

No, programming isn't lost if powered off for 10 mins or so.

Is the super capacitor separate to the PS then?

Yes, it's on the bottom right of the main board near the backup switch. In my experience it should hold up for at least a day or two, but turn the system off for as short a time as possible to be on the safe side.

There is a red 'run' LED on the main PCB a couple of inches above the PSU, if this comes on but doesn't start flashing regularly it's almost certainly the PSU - the +5V rail is present to make the LED come on, but not within tolerance for the processor to come out of reset and start running.

Thanks all, you were right about the PSU!

After replacement, the system functions as normal.

Been a lot of problems laterly with power units we put in new capacitors in all power units we have spare .saves getting soldering iron out on site

Glad to see you got a fix... Same, all our PSU's are refurbed before they go into stock, anyone else think it's strange that the caps on psu's fitted to the DCS range started to pop at the same time

I need to rebuild two of these power supplies. Can anyone recommend a source for the exact replacement capacitors?

I also seem to have misplaced the info that someone sent me recently for the replacement battery in a Prostar 816. Does it take a 3.6 NiMH?

Thanks!

I use a pair of 2200uF 10v Rubycon 10ZL2200MEFC12.5X20 from Farnell (order code 1144685) in each PSU. If you can't easily source these in the US they key parameters are:

Capacitance 2200µF
Voltage Rating >=10V
Height 20mm
Diameter 12.5mm
Mounting Through Hole
Terminals Radial Leaded
Lead Spacing 5mm
AC Ripple Current >2.2A

Digikey have P12357-ND and 565-1650-ND which look to be equivalent.

Thank you very much, indeed.

From the Tech bulletin that went out a few years ago,the original capacitors were rated at 10V and it was said that the replacements should be 16 V.Overvoltage on the capacitors was what caused the problem and made them bulge. If you replace them with more 10V capacitors, you are going to see this problem repeat itself, but it does take time for the capacitors to get damaged.

The original problem was on the OS100 ystem, but the DS616 which is the 816 in Europe also has this problem, especially if there is an SVMi card installed as it increases the power supply load.

As stated capacitor problem has been ongoing for several years. Any issues on compact2 Idcs 100, Officeserv 100, 816 we replace psu as a rule of thumb. Swap out takes about 5 mins. Of course there is always the issue of the super cap not retaining the programming at power down. However a quick manual copy of the DB through key programming gets most of it. If you are a Samsung registered dealer in the UK then the Caps are available by contacting the Middleton site Depot.

I can't solder so I took mine to the local TV repair guy and had him replace them.
