Here is the issue: I have a hotel property that switched from AT&T to Cox for their voice circuits back in April. yet they are still getting a giant bill from AT&T each month. I contacted their AT&T rep, and she told me this: "If this customer is PIC'd to another long distance carrier they would not continue to bill on an AT&T bill. I asked their local company (Cox) to verify the PIC code for this line - not just to check their records, but to also check the switch and translations for this customer. This customer has a T1 circuit at their location - they are also billing for AT&T Digital Link which is for local. If I saw no usage on their bill, I would have had this customer go straight to the disconnect desk to have this account disconnected, but due to the fact that I see actual usage, if they disconnected their One Net AT&T Account and are still PIC;d to AT&T, they will continue to bill on another AT&T bill at a higher rate."

My question is who sets the PIC code, and how can I physically check to make sure it is PIC'd correctly?

You used to be able to dial 1-700-555-4141 (doesn’t work today) and it would give the L/D PIC Code, 1-(area code)-700-4141 gives Regional toll provider. I'll look around for another number.

Are you sure that ARS/LCR on the property's switch isn't prefacing LD calls with the PIC for at&t? Even though their lines are from Cox, if the switch is manipulating digits, it will still route them over at&t's network.

Ed, you'd think that as long as I've been in this business, I would have thought to look at that!! But I didn't, and that's a great idea. I will look the next time I get over to that property!

The PIC is set in the switch when the translator/programmer builds the service… Is it possible that billing is set up one way, but the switch is translating another. With a cable company that does phones in the mix, that’s a real possibility frown ... I do not know of a way a end-user can check but a trouble ticket to very the actual PIC could make things better even IF it comes back NTF (no trouble found)

They sell them (and PRIs) fairly regularly in these parts, Hal. My customers who are using their service are delighted. This is largely due to the fact that they feed them with their own fiber, eliminating Verizon from the last mile.

In a nut shell the Pic is set by the local carrier switch. Pic verification number is 700-555-4141. It still works for me, the down side to this is if the local carrier is blocking 700 calls it will not work.

I tried dialing that number from my Comcast home phone the other day and it was blocked. Cox may also be blocking it.

My experience is that 1-700-555-4141 only works with traditional carriers. It's just one more item we lose with Broadband carriers.
