And there is no uninstaller- you have to manually edit your registry to rid yourself of the MagicJack software.

Story here.

Well, I don't know about that. The point is that there are strings attached to these bargain basement services that people who think they are getting a bargain should be aware of. In this case MJ is being clearly deceptive about not only how it works by not making its EULA terms prominent but by not providing a means to uninstall the software.

Anybody who puts software on you computer that provides them with information about you, doesn't tell you about it and doesn't provide a means to uninstall it is clearly guilty of disseminating malware in my book.

I will agree that the EULA should be prominently displayed on MagicJack's home page but I don't think that's a big deal these days that it's not. (I do wish they would offer an uninstall option if I want to uninstall it for whatever reason.)

After all, you must "agree" with the Terms Of Service (and therefore the EULA) BEFORE you download the software when you sign up for the service just like any other software you download from the Internet.

I've said in other threads that I do have a problem with MagicJack when I'm talking to someone with hearing problems but all-in-all I think it's well worth the money.

I just don't like to see a product bashed like the above linked article did with no data to back it up other than taking parts of the TOS and using those bits and pieces to substantiate an opposing point of view and/or a negative review.

If anyone cares to read the TOS for MagicJack, here it is.

As for spying on me,,,,, I couldn't care less if "they" know who I call. I don't read the advertisements anyway. wink
