I helped do a cutover (IP 500) to a PRI from a analog service. So they lost their line appearance buttons in the process. Whereas before they used the system in key mode emulation ie selected a line and dialed the number, now they press 9 and dial the number. I was told "this is too much work. Put it back." Reality check - they're pressing the same number of buttons, right? I see there is a way to remove the dial 9 but does that not create other issues?

I'm not sure of the correct terminology here but Auto Line Select (for Line/Pool Group) would eliminate the excessive button pressing, but the drawback is if the user picks up the handset and tries to make in intercom call.

Others will correct me if this is in error.

People in business have been dialing "9" for an outside line for years. Tell them welcome to the club!

This being an IP Office, there's several things you can do via shortcodes.

One of them eliminates the need to dial 9, however it requires you to dial the area code and 7 digit number, even for local calls. Maybe not a big deal, if you're already in a 10-digit dialing area.

This particular programming trick also allows you to return calls from your call log, where the incoming caller ID was captured.

I don't want to get too thick into the politics of the place. They can dial 9 and believe it is the law. I just get amused with how set in their ways phone users can get and how they hate change.

I had a customer that threw a fit about dialing 9 as well. They said "We didn't have to with the old system", so I ask what did you use then. They said "We just pushed the Line Out button". I quickly said I can program a "Line Out" button on your phones which was simply a speed dial of "9". They were thrilled with how simple it was to dial now that dial have to be bothered without dialing that pesky "9".

I have an IPO in my house with 4 SIP trunks. If i told my wife that she had to dial 9, i would be sleeping with the dog.

As TTT mentioned, a 1XXXXXXXXXX shortcode or XXXXXXXXXX will do the trick.....

Only hitch, your dial plan better not begin with a one!

Yeah, we have used the ole shortcode trick (as mentioned above) in the past, but my big question is why wasn't there a system planner layed out with the customer BEFORE the cut-over so they knew what to exspect after the cut?

Just askin..........
