I know that running an ext for modem on any switch is not preferable but I have often had to do it. However on the 200 ICP I have terrible problems with modems on exts. I have US Robotics V.92 programmed correctly per Mitel and it works great on trunks or PL however on exts it will not negotiate an error corrected connection - usually gets garbage - won't let me talk to the switch and locks up maintenance ports. I also have cable made per one of Mitel specs using only transmit, receive, and ground. Any thoughts?

I only ever use complete 9 pin serial cables, with a factory manufactured null-modem adapter.
Rarely have a problem!

yeah - tried that in this case and it was worse - couldn't talk to the switch at all and all kinds of garbage. When put 3 pin cable on worked great. Maybe next time I will try other configuration they give with stuff strapped on the mitel side.

Are you just trying to access the ICP remotely? Can you put it on the LAN and Secure Telnet or HTTP by port forwarding through their router?

Some of our techs have found problems with the 200 ICP and modems. They have put a RS232 Mini tester in line with the modem and it has cleared up the lockups. I dont know why but it seems to work.

ip connection is my preferred, but some of the places I work with do not have public IPs so that is not an option. I have just had a lot of problems with the modem connections to the maintenance port. The port is just pretty sensitive. At times some things work and others don't. I seem to have reasonably decent luck with the thing on a private line. Also I know some people who said they have more luck with the 33.6 Robotics as opposed to the V.92

I have best success by turning off all correction, etc and locking speed at either 19.2 or 9600. AKROGER, sounds like modem is getting too high a voltage from, or sending too high a voltage to, the Mitel. Remember how faxes and modems don't do too well on really hot C.O. lines? Same effect on serial side of the modem. Some of the modem power supplies are not exactly hi-tech when it comes to voltage regulation! John C. (Not Garand)

I fought this on my last 2 ICP installs. Modem won't work on an extension, drops calls, won't connect, etc. especially over fiber. I could dial through my laptop modem connected to an extension onsite to the modem extension connected to the switch, but if I dialed out and got transferred back into the switch it woul not connect and would time out. So I installed a DPDT toggle on the fax line which is copper, and it works every time. Straight through cable, not null modem.
