I have a customer who prefers to have a MOH device (CD player, etc) that is made only for a telephone system, rather than a regular CD player. I guess he really wants to spend a lot more money...and probably is thinking of larger PBX types.
I need this for a Norstar key system, prefer no analog line devices. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

You can google OHP 5000 and get a bunch of different prices. You load a CD once and it is there playing until you load another CD to change it.
Best I know of.
I get mine from Jenne Distributors 800-422-6191 because they were the cheapest I could find and it is the same box if you pay $100 more somewhere else.

There are several to choose from. Many that use smart cards instead of CD's.
The one we use is Magix on Hold by Avaya. But like I said there are many to choose from. And a lot of them includes a custom made production for the customer with purchase price.

I like to use the USB-1100 series from Premier Technologies. https://www.premtech.com/ It uses a standard USB memory stick. Just stick it in your computer's USB port, drag and drop your MP3s into it then stick it into the player's USB port. As usual the usual warning about using copyrighted music for business purposes. Make sure whatever you play is legal for your use. CDs and radio will get you in trouble. -Hal

These are good suggestions, thanks. It amazes me, though, that there is seemingly nothing costwise in between the $29 CD player and the $299 for new tech items.

The OHP, as Bunnie said and the USB-1100 as Hal had mentioned, are both very good products and I have sold and installed both. I would have to say though that I like the USB-1100 better,it's easier for the you or the customer to create a more custom kind of script for the MOH you want the customer to hear. But, everyone has their own way of making choices so check them both out.

The nice thing about the USB-1100 is that the production MP3 file can be easily emailed to the customer and they should have no problem copying it to a memory stick in a USB port. They can keep backups and change programs just as easily.
I know these players cost more but they are bullet proof.

You definitely want a device targeted for the telecomm on-hold role rather than a consumer-grade ($29) CD-ROM player. Those are not designed to stand up to 24-7 usage and the plastic spindle bearing will wear down in no time. It might last longer in a static installation than when carried around by street dancers but you'll have drop-outs and intermittent playback sooner than later. Hence the iPod and its ilk - rotating machinery eats itself. Several CD-ROM drive manufacturers specifically warned me against keeping their drives spinning when I queried about that for a medical imaging application we produce.
