I am not a telephone tech but we are having problems with some of our extensions. When you lift the handset, nothing happens. We have to manually press the call button or a line extension. When we do that... the spkr button lights. When we try and hang up by putting the handset down, it does nothing. We have to hang up by pressing the spkr button. During this cumbersome process, the speakerphone doesn't even work. Any suggestions?

I think your phone is in headset mode. Is there a headset button on the phone? I think the feature code is "dial" - 801 toggles between on and off.
