Right now we have Norstar 8x24 w/dr3 software. We want to have the capability of someone from the outside calling me for instance direct versus having to go thru the receptionist. How does that work?

You have to upgrade to DR5 and get DID modules and order DID lines with block of numbers and when somebody call it will reach you directely.

you also have the option of assigning regular POTS lines as private lines to an extension, as Sam mentioned. If you don't want DID's or private lines, install a Voice mail system and use it as an auto-attendant.

POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service) Lines
best bet is to assign two privet lines to the extension, that way you have your main privet line and the second will be your rollover, that way a caller wont get a busy signal. another way is to make one line privet to an extension then have it rollover to your main hunt group, that way if you are on the privet line and a second caller tries you the receptionist has the option of answering the call

did's or vmail are good choices, but cost money
