Went to a SBC customer that keeps frying ports and phones on 2nd building feed on 200 pair feeder. The cable has carbon protectors and is grounded properly, but they keep loosing equipment after storms.

I think I should put some extra lighting protection at each end. Either gas or electronic. What would you recomend? Also, at what trip setting would you recomend? (25 volts, 48 volts, etc.) I belive phones are at 15 to 26 volts across tip and ring.

Thanks,
Jeff

JJ,
I only use the Porta Systems 581P with gas tubes at both ends, and have had no problems.
I do not know what they are rated at.

If you haven't looked at Panamax protectors you need to!

These units are really quick qnd the newest ones have PTC units in them instead of fuses so you don't have to send them in for repair if they take a strong enough hit.

We started using them about 7 years ago on all installs. We have a lot of cloud to ground lightning around here all year long.

They have units for both the CO side and also for digital station side.

The Gas tube and carbon protectors are strictly for Primary protection only and they usually don't kick in fast enough.

ITWLINX UP2B-75F(for digital station),UP2B-235F(for analog trunks) and ONEAC online 6 series(yellow for digital station, black for analog trunks or stations) have worked well for me. Also panamax and oneac at one time offered insurance that would pay for damaged equipment if product was properly installed.
