I am setting up a BCM 400 and I have 6 IP phones (i2004) that are all in house. I've set up a separate switch for the IP phones. there is plenty of data cables at each desk location so cable is not a problem. So we have almost a separate network for the Ip phones. The BCM acts as a DHCP server for the IP phones. This all takes place on LAN1 of the BCM

So my questions are: can I use LAN2 to manage the BCM via their existing data network but Can I shut off DHCP on LAN2 only...so I can keep my phones receiving IPs on LAN1.

As a follow up, if my IP on LAN1 is 10.10.10.1 how would I configure my IP phones manually (if I have to do it this way).

PART I: Yes. If you configure the BCM to provide DHCP services, a local scope will be available for each of the LAN interfaces. If you don't want it to provide addresses to LAN 2, just disable the scope (scope status) for that interface (Services-->DHCP-->Local Scope-->LAN2).


PART II: First, be sure that LAN1 is the Published IP. Then, use your 10.10.10.1 address for the S1 parameter.

thanks, this is what I needed. Can I then assign a static IP to LAN2 and use it for remote admin via VPN?

Also, the customer may want PCM since they get caller ID on their PRI. Would using LAN2 for this application work? Or, since the phones are on LAN1 then LAN1 has to be on the computer network to get PCM and other CTI applications. Am I making sense?

Finally is is worth it to try to connect a POTS line to the modem for remote admin or is it way too slow (that's what I heard).

Yes. If you will have VPN access to the customer's network (connected to LAN2), you will be able to access the BCM.

You will be able to use PCM, but you will need to point the application at the Published IP (probably LAN1). For the traffic to get there, you will have to add a route in the device that the user's PCs have assigned as their default gateway (or enable a dynamic routing protocol).

Keep the modem line in your back pocket. If you have VPN access you will want to use that. Dial-up to a BCM is PAINFULLY slow, although that is changing on the new platform.

I should have asked earlier, is there a way to do a set copy like in the norstar?

also, i've read the bcm can provide music on hold by itself. The manual says there are some sound files on the system. I don't know where. It appears I can upload an MP3 or other sound file to the BCM for MOH. Is that correct and is it worth it or am I better off just getting a MOH device.
