Our Cics suddenly has static and weird noises on 3 out of the 4 lines after a good lightening storm. Any ideas?

Occaisonaly it would answer and the caller would also hear fax like tones on their end and we heard nothing, but the caller id showed who it was and they called back and we could hear them.


The lines test fine at the street, so it is the system

My questio is what to replace...trunk card or entire system?

The trunk card would be the first thing to try (that is probably it).

It’s hard to say what needs replacing without doing some testing. You could try putting the line card in the other slot and see if the trouble follows.

Regarding the fax tones answering: If this is from an install within the last couple of years it may be your internal RAD answering. The last software version had it enabled by default to answer line 1, and if your installer did not disable it, that would happen. A way to test it is to dial in on line 1 and let it ring up to 4-6 times. If the fax tone answers every time, it could be that, assuming you don’t have a fax or modem on the line. It might be a problem that only happens occasionally if you have an internal or external voice mail that could also answer line 1 before the RAD has a chance.
