We have a MICS ver 6.1 and have working jacks all over the place. An employee who is changing desks wants to take her phone with her. Other than plugging it into another jack, what must we do?

Most will say swing cross-connects at the backboard, however there is an set-relocate. This must be activated and the jack also must be cross connected to the mics. Please note there are numerous threads regarding the instability of set-relocation programming.

It is SOOO much better to change the cross-cuts. This keeps the DN's in order and it keeps you a job relocating phones. But if you have to use the relocate, the DN's will get out of order of the port numbers. This makes it more difficult to troubleshoot unless you keep a log of the ports and DN's and update it. Also, once in a blue moon weird things have been rumored to happen. Also, You better not unplug more than two phones at one time to relocate them. You need to plug them back in at the new location and make sure they work before trying to relocate any more.....two only at a time.

I might add, the first setb unplugged is also the 1st re-attached.

That is easy for all of us pros to do. And, I too would probably fire any tech that used 'set relocation' for a move. But... I do have a lot of customers that move there own phones using 'set relocation'. The system belongs to them and they have the right to make a mess of it if they choose. I always tell customers about the problems that can be created. And, I have been paid several times to FIX problems as a result of the feature's improper use. It does work if it is used correctly by the end user. But, they need to know 1) HOW to use it correctly; and 2) that having used it can potentially result in a higher repair bill if their system dies (the rebuild can take MUCH longer).

I'm with Marty on this one. It's their switch and our professional duty to inform them of the risks vs the benefits.
I also recommend to my customers they keep a log book of DN's cross referenced to port numbers just in case the unthinkable happenes.

Auto set relocation is the worst invention ever. Several times we've had sites where the customer would come in on MOnday morning and no one's phone was right. Seems the carpet got replaced/cleaned over the weekend and the installers unplugged all the sets to prevent damage.

I always turn it off & tell the clients to call me if & when they want to move someone. Then, I'll "walk them though it" over the phone, including turning it of after.
Takes no real time, saves me a trip & keeps the client happy. I've also had the painters unplug all ofice phones on the weekend....3 hours on the phone, long distance (pouring rain and avoid Montreal whenever possible) fixed it up. It would have taken longer than that just in travelling! Client more than willing to pay!
