But, I also like the Newton's Telecom Dictionary which is really good for understanding all the different acronym's in this industry.

I bought Newtons today on Amazon.
I also bought the CCNA Official Exam Certification Library.
I took CCNA in college for one semester which was a 4 hour class every Thursday so I didn't learn much cramming.
Hopefully I can learn it myself.
Do you recommend getting actual Cisco hardware to practice on?

you can get simulator software for the CCNA which works well . for the software end , if you took it for a year then you should have enough hands on hardware experiance
check here in the networking forum , somebody was setting up a lab with some cisco routers .
