I may be misunderstanding exactly what you are trying to do. Please explain exactly all of the requirements and features you need and I'm sure we will be able to guide you in the right direction.
As far as the VM 4000 goes, it will provide MOH (music On Hold) according to the descriptions I've read.

I want my phone to have music on hold...and voicemail now that I've seen the 4500.
basically when people call, I want to place the call on hold and provide music while they wait.
It looks like the 4500 has VM, auto-attendant (which i really like) but not MOH on the base model.

If you want voice mail, auto attendant, and music on hold a small keysystem is your best option.

What I mean is that if you need all of that you will be better off buying a small key system rather than trying to piece together something that may or may not work.
Again, I'll ask you to list all of the requirements and features you are looking for.
Provide us with the number of telephones you are going to have, how many lines you have, etc... and we can help you.
It sounds to me like you will be needing the help of a professional interconnect company. We have many members that may be in your area so you should be able to get the help you need here.

This is just for one line. A home line that I may have some business calls on.
One line, no extentions, auto-attendant (may use this in the future, so I want it), MOH, and voicemail.
I liked this phone becuase it was cheap for what I am looking for.
Thanks for the replies, keep em' coming.

How about a Viking MOH adapter and any single-line set, keeping it simple.

You will either have to go with a small key system for the features you want or you could get one of those fax machines that answers the call with sort of an auto attendant (I think it would be something you record) saying to send a fax press 1, To speak to someone press 2, and to leave a message press3. But I doubt there is one with music on hold so you would have to go with something like what Ed suggested.
I can't remember the particular brand but I hooked one up for a guy years ago in his home office and he said it gave his clients the impression his company was a lot bigger than it actually was.
