I have heard that there is a way to wire two resistors (one at each fax location) that will allow only one fax to work at the same time. Could someone please tell me in detail how to wire this, and what size resistor will work best.

I think you might be thinking of an exclusion device, such as Viking Electronic's TG-1 which looks very much like a resistor. Using one of these on each fax will permit either one to be used on the same line, but not both at the same time.

Just about any telecommunications supply house, like Graybar, carries Viking products. We aren't allowed to discuss prices in this forum, but I assure you that they are not expensive at all.

we used to use a ton of them in the modem days .
this will work for outgoing so that only one fax can grab dialtone at a time but how are you going to handle incoming ?
