Saw this in another forum. I received a telephone call last evening from an individual identifying himself as an AT&T Service technician (could also be Telus) who was conducting a test on the telephone lines. He stated that to complete the test I should touch nine(9), zero(0), the pound sign (#), and then hang up. Luckily, I was suspicious and refused. Upon contacting the telephone company, I was informed that by pushing 90#, you give the requesting individual full access to your telephone line, which enables them to place long distance calls billed to your home phone number. I was further informed that this scam has been originating from many local jails/prison s DO NOT press 9 0# for ANYONE. The GTE Security Department requested that I share this information with EVERYONE I KNOW. After checking with Verizon they said it was true, so do not dial 90# for anyone !!!!! Any truth to it?

I know it's been around a while. It's a cellular phone scam right...not phone systems. I don't think it can happen on a home phone or key system unless programmed to allow it. Maybe the Hotels/Motels that use single line phones..well with the dialing 9...it may be workable in that scenario. I don't know, figured some of you experts would know.

According to the snopes link it's more hipe than fact. Although it could happen on a PBX, depending on how it's set up.

A lot of auto attendant's primarily ,business systems that call forward through AA without properly being set up,No pound required. Most hotel /motel's have been scammed so many ways, for so long they are wise to it. One of the most used 9+0 ask operator to make the call,If they don't recognize the line as a hotel line your gone.

That used to happen on one of the switchbords here. They would call in and get transfered (9 0)to an outside operator and then be able to get her to make any kind of long distance call. Mostly overseas. It would look like it came from the switch board number.

I think this is 100% true. Every time I get a new receptionist at one of my locations. I warn her of this. I always tell her never to transfer to anything that starts with 9 and that no one from the phone company will ever call you without me calling first.
