I recently mis-applied a newer BCM patch (December System Update) before installing the older patch (October Desktop Update). Does anyone know if it matters or not that I applied the newer patch first?

Check the read me text file that comes patches. Alot of patches include the old updates with them.

newest release bring is current therefore doesn't matter as long as you applied the newest last.

As mikeq said check the readme file of that patch, the dependencies of the patches will be mentioned in that.
Apply the dependency patches and the latest patch.
Don't forget to check the readme file of that dependency patches.. that may have some requirements.
